SIMULATION: Video: Stratospheric ozone affects surface air-quality - LLNL

SUMMARY

3D, 39.9 MB

This simulation shows how stratospheric ozone can be transported by the winds to the ground, where it mixes with ozone created by urban pollution.

GOALS

To demostrate how concentrations of trace pollutates are transported, affecting air quality and health.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING MATERIALS

Watch >> Stratospheric ozone affects surface air-quality

3D_ozone.m4v (39.9MB),
3D_ozone.3gp ( cellular phone version, 4MB)

TEACHING NOTES / CONTEXT FOR USE

Ozone is produced naturally high up in the atmosphere. This layer of ozone in the stratosphere protects us from ultaviolet sunlight. However, ozone is toxic to plants and humans. This simulation demostrates how ozone is transported by wind and mixes with urban pollution. This could be used to study atmospheric chemistry and climate change and effects on human health.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is at the descretion of the educator and how this model is applied.
