Case Study: Carbon Capture and Sequestration Demonstration Project Case Study

Fossil Fuels:

PRESENTATION/POWERPOINT: Case Study: Carbon Capture and Sequestration Demonstration Project Case Study

SUMMARY

This is a comprehensive presentation on Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS)– the process of trapping and storing carbon dioxide produced by burning fossil fuels; and Geoengineering – manipulation of environmental processes in an attempt to counteract the effects of global warming. It was presented at the Carbon Capture & Sequestration Summit, 2010, by Richard A. Esposito, Principal Research Geologist, Southern Company Services.

This presentation focuses on:

  • Sequestration Projects: Science, Risk, and Pilot Injections
  • CCS Demonstration Project

GOALS

This presentation presents: CCS Key Drivers & Research Objectives:

  • Deploy integrated CCS demonstrations to understand costs, performance, permitting & operations of various technologies
  • Advance capture technology performance to preserve new and retrofit PC coal options
  • “Learn by doing” to create competitive advantage and leadership position in deployment

TEACHING NOTES / CONTEXT FOR USE

This presentation gives a good overview of CCS Key Drivers & Research Objectives:

Key Drivers

  • Compliance with carbon legislation or environmental regulation
  • 200 years of domestic fossil fuel resources
  • Fossil generation assets + new technology controls
  • Challenging regional renewable portfolio
  • World class sequestration geology with strong demand for CO2 -EOR

Research Objectives

  • Deploy integrated CCS demonstrations to understand costs, performance, permitting & operations of various technologies
  • Advance capture technology performance to preserve new and retrofit PC coal options
  • “Learn by doing” to create competitive advantage and leadership position in deployment

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is at the discretion of the educator and how this presentation is applied.
