SIMULATION: Simulation: Climate Change: A simulation with commentary - CLEAN

SUMMARY

Video length: 18:01 min and 3:45 min.

Selected for the CLEAN Collection. The activity description was developed by CLEAN reviewers.

This webpage contains two videos that show climate visualizations created by super computers. Both videos show climate changes that may occur during the 21st Century due to human activities based on IPCC science.

GOALS

Japanese scientist exposes students to cultural perspectives on the topic of climate change.

TEACHING NOTES / CONTEXT FOR USE

Teaching Tips by CLEAN Reviewers:

  • Teachers should provide additional background information.
  • The teacher or a student could provide the commentary for the short video.

About the Science

  • These are detailed visualizations on changes of temperature that may occur on a global scale due to increased greenhouse gas concentrations.
  • Based on IPCC AR4 science and scenarios.
  • The long (18:10) video contains an English voice-over of a Japanese scientist who describes the Keeling curve, climate models, future scenarios of average global temperature and precipitation, change in soil moisture content, sea level rise, and reduction in sea ice.
  • Topics are paired with computer model visualizations.
  • The long video also includes the impacts of climate change and suggestions to curbing greenhouse gas emissions.
  • The short (3:45) video contains a few descriptive bullets and the visualizations, but contains no commentary.

Passed initial science review - expert science review pending.
