SUMMARY

17:40 minutes

TED Talks series, FILMED JUL 2009 • POSTED AUG 2009 • TEDGlobal 2009

Janine Benyus has a message for inventors: When solving a design problem, look to nature first. There you'll find inspired designs for making things waterproof, aerodynamic, solar-powered and more. Here she reveals dozens of new products that take their cue from nature with spectacular results.

GOAL

Benyus discusses how the Earth's systems and biological systems in nature should be researched and modeled by humans to optimize multiple aspects of human life; such as health, energy efficiency, communication and more.

ACTIVITY DESCRIPTION AND TEACHING MATERIALS

They [Biomimics] have asked themselves, 'What if, everytime I started to invent something, I asked 'How would nature solve this?'" (Janine Benyus)

TEACHING NOTES / CONTEXT FOR USE

This material can be used to explore how there is still much that humans can learn from Mother Nature and the systems in the environment and biology that already exist in nature. Biomimicry is discussed and how the human population can benefit from it tremendously.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is at the discretion of the educator and how this material is applied.

REFERENCES AND RESOURCES
